Senior Mechanical Engineer — Vacuum Pump Product Development (Scroll & Multistage Roots)

Senior Mechanical Engineer — Vacuum Pump Product Development
(Scroll & Multistage Roots)
Albuquerque, New Mexico • Full-Time • On-Site
Rotordynamics & Tolerances Thermal & Materials FEA / Test / Validation SolidWorks & PDM Leadership & IP

Lead the development of next-generation dry scroll and multistage Roots vacuum pumps that power real R&D. At Ideal Vacuum Products, you’ll own the product lifecycle—concept, analysis, prototype, verification, release, and service— solving hard problems in thermal growth, rotating clearances, leakage paths, and vibration. You’ll guide a cross-functional team, collaborate with our in-house machine shop and test labs, and deliver reliable, manufacturable designs on schedule—while mentoring engineers and contributing to our IP portfolio.

Primary Responsibilities

Product Leadership & Lifecycle

  • Own pump subsystems from requirements through DV/PV, launch, and field support; drive schedules, risks, and milestones.
  • Frame trade-offs (performance, cost, reliability) and make data-driven decisions; present design reviews to leadership.
  • Capture know-how via standards, best practices, and invention disclosures/patent applications.

Core Pump Design

  • Design rotors, stators/scrolls, shafts, seals, valves, housings, motor mounts, and acoustic/thermal covers in SolidWorks.
  • Engineer running clearances, coating/finish specs, and tribological interfaces to balance efficiency and durability.
  • Apply GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and tolerance stacks to ensure interchangeability and stable yields.

Analysis, Verification & Test

  • Perform structural/thermal FEA, basic rotordynamic checks, and thermal expansion studies to protect critical gaps.
  • Plan and execute DOEs, DVPRs, and life tests; instrument rigs for pressure, flow, temperature, vibration, and power.
  • Lead root-cause analysis (DFMEA/8D), iterate designs, and lock parameters for production.

Manufacturing Enablement

  • Collaborate with CNC, sheet metal, and molding suppliers; define critical-to-quality features and inspection methods (CMM, gaging).
  • Create drawing packages, BOMs, assembly work instructions, and custom fixtures/tooling; manage revisions via PDM/ECO.
  • Partner with supply chain on cost, yield, and lead-time improvements; support packaging/industrial design for brand fit.

Qualifications We’re Seeking

  • Track Record: Production mechanical product development with ownership from concept to launch; vacuum pumps, compressors, turbomachinery, or high-speed rotating equipment strongly preferred.
  • Design Tools: SolidWorks (advanced assemblies/drawings) and PDM; proficiency with tolerance stacks and GD&T.
  • Analysis: Hands-on FEA (thermal/structural); familiarity with vibration/rotordynamics and thermal management.
  • Manufacturing: CNC machining, coatings/finishes, balancing, CMM inspection; pragmatic DFM/DFA.
  • Leadership: Mentors engineers, coordinates cross-functional teams, and communicates crisply to technical and executive audiences.

Education & Experience

  • BS in ME (or related) + 12+ years product development; or
  • MS in ME (or related) + 8+ years; or
  • PhD in ME (or related) + 5+ years.
  • =2 years leading specialized technologies or new-tech programs.

Beneficial Backgrounds

  • Dry scroll, multistage Roots, turbomolecular pumps.
  • Compressors (screw/scroll/Roots), HVAC refrigeration compressors.
  • Automotive: transmissions, superchargers, turbochargers; high-speed e-motors.
  • Gas turbines, small engines, rotary water pumps, aerospace mechanisms.

Benefits

  • Flexible schedule: offices open 6am–6pm (Mon–Fri), pick your 40 hours.
  • Highly competitive, negotiable salary with profit-sharing bonuses.
  • Medical (employer covers up to 50% of employee & family premiums), dental, and vision.
  • FSA & HSA options.
  • 401(k) with full match up to 3% after 90 days.
  • Paid time off (vacation & sick), and 8–10 paid holidays.
  • Group Term Life/AD&D, Short-Term Disability, and Long-Term Disability coverage.

Salary

Compensation is very competitive and commensurate with impact. Bonuses are available for senior engineers who can accelerate prototypes, mature designs rapidly, and hit development goals.
